As he is elected now deputy speaker in parliament, Sierra Leoneans are concerned on his fight against corruption.
This is expressed by people in various quarters of public spheres.
It could be recalled that in 2019, the Deputy Speaker of the Sixth Parliament Hon. Ibrahim Tawa Conteh, raised on a radio interview the corruption allegations against the suspended Clerk of Parliament Hon. Umarr Paran Tarawalie.
Hon. Tawa also doubles as the Western Urban Area Deputy Chairman for the SLPP
In return, Hon. Umar Paran Tarawalie on the same program made similar allegations against him.
As now a key stakeholder now, it brings the question on whether Hon. Ibrahim Tawa Conteh as would be able to fight corruption in the House of Parliament.
Based on the allegations raised by Hon. Tawa Conteh and the Clerk of Parliament Hon. Umar Paran Tarawalie, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) mounted investigation into allegations of misappropriation of public funds and other related accountability issues relating to Members of Parliament (MPs) including Parliamentary leadership.
In 2019, Hon. Ibrahim Tawa Conteh and Hindolo Moiwo Gevao, were whistleblowers when the House of Parliament was labeled as a second most corrupt institutions in Sierra Leone based on the Public Perception Survey report by Center for Accountability and Rule of Law (CARL).
According to the report, citizens classified Parliament the second most corrupt institution in Sierra Leone.
When Hon Ibrahim Tawa Conteh, was interviewed by one our local radio stations, he admitted that the House of Parliament is corrupt.
On Thursday 2nd May 2024, Hon. Ibrahim Tawa Conteh has been elected as Deputy Speaker of the Sixth Parliament with 94 votes cast for him.
Majority of Sierra Leoneans are happy and asking question if Hon. Ibrahim Tawa Conteh will fight against corruption in Parliament.
Moreover, Hon. Tawa Conteh has served as Member of Parliament in the Fifth Parliament of the Second Republic to present.
He is currently serving in his second term having been elected as Member of Parliament in the West Urban District.
He is also currently the Deputy Regional Chairman of the Sierra Leone People’s Party Western Region.
In the Sixth Parliament, he was the Deputy Chief Whip II who is responsible for delegated duties from the Chief Whip in the maintenance of party discipline and coordination of Members in Parliament.
Hon. Tawa has been instrumental in managing the party’s legislative policy and programs, linking government and the opposition and promoting dialogue within the membership of the party in Parliament.
Hon. Ibrahim Tawa Conteh has served as committees chairman for various committees in the House Parliament.
Appointing him as a Deputy Speaker is not a chance, but a responsibility assigned and bestowed on him.
