The Audit Services Sierra Leone’s report has on Tuesday 19th December 2023 been tabled before the House of Parliament.
According to the Audit Report, a total of over Le327 billion, $1.1M, £4,746 and €39,526 are pilfered from the “public purse” in 2022 alone.
Many quarters from the public have called for a government action on key issues stated in the report to be looked into and must not be ‘whitewashed’ or put under the green carpets.
The Acting Auditor-General has also informed the general public that the Audit Report on the Accounts which were submitted to Parliament on Thursday 14th December, 2023 of Sierra Leone for the year as ended on 31st December [2022] have been tabled in Parliament on Tuesday 19th December, 2023.
According to ASSL, Section 119(2) of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone mandates the Auditor-General to audit the Public Accounts of Sierra Leone and all public offices including; the courts, the accounts of the central and those of the local government administrations, the universities and public institutions of like nature, and any statutory corporation, company or other body or organisation being established by an Act of Parliament or any statutory instrument or otherwise being set up partly or wholly out of Public Funds.
The office said, Section 119(4) of the 1991 Constitution also states that the Auditor-General shall within twelve months of the end of the immediate preceding financial year, submit his report to Parliament and shall in that report draw attention to any irregularities in the audited accounts and to any other matter which in his opinion ought to be brought to the notice of Parliament.
