The Inspector General of the Sierra Leone Police, if smart enough should have by now realized that, there are no personal problems between the Press and the Police.
The only problem that people may probably say sometimes is with the style of administration with which some of his personal, mostly junior ones, which needs checks and balances.
The Police as a professional body should realized that the media has the social and moral responsibility of interpreting social realities and have the liberty to either be on the side of the people, in which option dignity, integrity, freedom and sovereignty lies or team up with contemporary custodians of state functionaries.
As a media outlet, we have no room for parochialism; rather, we are always receptive to good ideals of society.
As Journalists, our sacred duty is to promote diversity and cater for the interest of the whole.
In every public affair positions get hardened when the key-players find it very difficult to find a common ground. As Journalists, we should be very careful and avoid flagrant and frivolous use of our pen. We should not misuse the libertarian theory of the Press which stops at the social responsibility level.
The people of this nation are in pain to see a truly independent and professional police force turned into a political police force taking instructions from State House.
Our quest is to see resources meant for the people of Sierra Leone used in a sustainable manner to meet the ardent needs of all rather than to just satisfy the narrow minded or just a handful of selected few in the name of politics.
We want to see the ego of the average policeman enhanced; see him motivated enough, in a tranquil environment capable of tracking down corruption, if only the police are not properly paid how can they fight corruption.
This is the only way we could achieve a people-centered, people-driven and development oriented, with a human face.
The assumption of feeling protected by the police is a day dream, sometimes seems naïve, especially when news of police corruption circulates all over the country. However, Journalists and Police are partners in national development, sometimes some people see the Journalists as enemy to the police when it comes to national issues.
