There is no doubt in the saying that Sierra Leone is amongst the smallest countries in the world projecting a population above seven million with a rich mineral and natural resources including diamond, gold, iron ore, elegant rain fall forest, arable land scape, rich sea and rivers across the country that sometimes become a menace to citizens as it courses disaster especially during the raining seasons and many more natural resources.
Amidst these entire God given wealth, the country is paradoxically classed amongst the poorest countries in the world. Regrettably, many analysts from various quarters have over the years figured out factors that are militating against the growth of the country.
Bad leadership, political patronage, regionalism, tribalism and endemic corruption are some of them that are on the lips of many patriotic citizens who are concerned about the growth of the country.
Nevertheless, some Sierra Leoneans in many instances always compare Sierra Leone with other countries in the sub region. What is more glaring is the nauseating abject poverty that is constantly eating the fabric of this nation propelled by the above factors. Everything is battered! Talk about economy is a forgone conclusion to compare to other countries around us. Our political system is not write home about. All that is said about it is endless tension precipitated by discontent by many citizens. Our hope is bleak and shattered to the point that very few people are leak the honey put at the peril of the majority. Hardly a day passes, week or month that will convince them to conjure recent history of good story that will serve as a rostrum for future hope for many downtrodden and despondent Sierra Leoneans who are endlessly clamoring for another Moses. But the million dollar question is when and who will be this long awaited savior to remove the anxious citizens of this impoverished nation which is rapidly going in to the dungeon by every tick of the clock.
Truly said, a good number of citizens are oblivious about their existence on this planet earth in this country given the fact that they are merely living on providence because their monthly salaries are not sufficed to augment them to challenge the galloping inflation rate in the country.
Many pundits believe that Sierra Leone has even gone beyond the stage in the most difficult days of Ghana when [IYEKI AMAH] wrote his book “The Beautiful Ones Are Not yet Born’’. This who now message in that prose will agree with me that I have the right in my comparison. Honestly, who is not corrupt in Sierra Leone?
In fact because of the prevailing precarious situation in the country predicated by our negative attitude we lack confidence in ourselves and every in the country. And the longer we are apart, the more our suffering continues. In fact, there is no way to escape corruption because corruption itself is constantly hunting us as we are together and we believe that it is the only means of survival.
Ironically those who claim to be protagonists of fighting corruption are seemingly ridiculing minds of many citizens to beg the question which type of corruption that the ACC is looking for in their fight?
