The Wise Bird will always keep people informed about on daily happenings in and out of the country.

As promised by the Wise Bird to always inform the people, he will keep up to those at all times, the pages of the Audit Report will be turned to let people know what is in that all important document.

The Wise Bird turned to page 337 of the report with sub-heading titled ‘Lack of surveillance system at the correctional centres within Western Areas.

Bra Parrot noticed from the report that, the audit team conducted physical verification in some areas of operations of the SLCS in the Western Area.

 The team, according to the report observed that, the correctional centres at New England (female and re-integration) and Waterloo (pre-trial) did not have  Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems.

The report went further to say that, even the centre at Pademba Road (male) had a CCTV system that was not functioning at the time of the audit team’s visit.

However, the Wise Bird saw the recommendation of the audit team which states that an urgent action needs to be taken by installing CCTV camera in all of the centres of the SLCS and they should be regularly monitored.

The report also states that security officers manning the gate should be provided with at least hand-held scanners to help them search the visitors.

On page 338 the report talked about overcrowding at the male and female correctional centres.

According to the report, diets, sanitary materials, medical care, education, sports and other resources may not be enough to meet the needs of the number of current inmates.

The Wise Bird noticed that the audit team was very much concerned about the health of the inmates.

According to the report, the audit team stated that, the inmates could be exposed to increased health risks, especially from infections or communicable diseases and these will easily be spread among other inmates, thus putting the lives of staff and other stakeholders at risk.

The Wise Bird will continue to make a follow-up on each of the stories contain in the Audit Report.
