In less than 12 months since President Julius Maada Bio took over governance, members and supporters of the party have begun to lay serious emphasis on who is going to succeed him come 2028 election when he is expected to relinquish power.
In the South/East Region, Alie Kabba’s, Bio’s former Foreign Affairs minister and Permanent Representative to USA, support by party members, is gaining momentum.
In some school of thought hold by those the capital city, names like Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, first lady Fatima Bio and the Chief Minister Dr. David M. Sengeh, are frequently talked about among party stalwarts.
It is also rumoured that the Elder’s Council of the SLPP is also interested to make its recommendations while the young generation are said to be very supportive of President Bio’s choice.
The current Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh is interested in the highest position in the country but is rumoured to be less popular among the candidates.
However, he hopes to succeed President Bio. His position will likely go to be given to another northerner to allow a territorial equilibrium. It seems clear now that the power struggle ahead is another major problem President Bio is currently thinking about.
While he is appealing to all his followers for calm, many have begun the ball rolling for the top-post. It is not yet known whether Bio’s successor will be elected in a convention already negotiated for.
Or Bio will have no cause to complain as all ministers, politicians and supporters in the party will listen and respect his next choice of leader.
