As Kush-smoking escalates in the country since 2018 to present, Sierra Leone Police (SLP) have intensified massive warfare against Kush selling or smoking in a bid to curb the pending distress among youth in Sierra Leone.
On Wednesday February 21, 2024 the SLP clearly updated journalists at their headquarters at Gorge Street in Freetown. They informed press men regarding positive progress they’d made at the national level.
In his statement, AIG Brima Kannah, Regional Commander of South, said 62 persons were arrested with Kush and other illegal drugs end of 2023.
The arrested persons were charged at the Kenema Magistrate Court with what they referred as spread offences, adding that some were granted bail. Adding that the total amount gathered so far on illegal drugs intake or sale is about Two Billon Leones. Police, however, cited some endless challenges.
According to AIG Freetown-west region, Sylvester Koroma, he said the situation in Freetown is calm at the moment.
Although, he added, there are critical encounters being made especially with the commencement of the WAKA FINE buses in the municipality of Freetown.
He maintains that the new buses are allowed to use the main city’s route moving from Lumley to bus station in the central capital.
But private business vans, he said, are only allowed to use Aberdeen-Lumley beach road for now.
In the similar view, Commissioner Andrew M. Kamara, Regional Commander East also told pressmen that Kailahun district is safe though their porous borders along the crossing points needed to be beefed up with security personnel in order to control the situation at hand.
In other sad development, the Director of Human Resources of the Sierra Leone Police, ACP James Musa made a disclaimer regarding the resignation of Assistant Commissioner, Mira Yainkain Dumbuya.
Madam Dumbuya is a decorated senior officer with an experience of 17 years and some months served in the Sierra Lone Police.
He said the resignation of Mira Dumbuya is improper and undone based on the SLP Code of Conducts, adding that police officers are entitled to resign but due process must be followed.
And that, he said, they would man a free and fair investigation about her when it deems necessary.
