After three meetings since 2010 with a one-all drawn between Sierra Leone and Egypt, Leone Stars were able to make a dramatic change with a 2-1 defeat against Egypt in 2011.
But, on Sunday, 19th November, 2023, the host nation Leone Stars lost two- zero to Egypt in their second qualifier of the FIFA World Cup 2026 in Liberia. The game was played in a neutral ground in Monrovia.

The anticipation is palpable as Egypt and Sierra Leone gear up for a pivotal World Cup qualifying match, upon the return match. The significance of this encounter was immense for both teams, with the Pharaohs aiming to maintain their dominance, and Sierra Leone striving for their first World Cup appearance.
Hopes for Leone Stars coach after the defeat on Sunday-weekend, is not lost.
Sierra Leone’s coach, Amidu Karim, remains optimistic about their prospects against Egypt, a team with seven African Cup of Nations titles under their belt.
Karim believes that playing against formidable teams is beneficial for their growth. He holds fond memories of his time in the Egyptian league during the 1990s and hopes to steer his team towards their maiden World Cup appearance, staged to place in 2026.
