Though secret society activities are frown at by the University Act of 2021, they are still being conducted at University of Sierra Leone’s campuses.
On Thursday, February 1st 2024, the Sierra Leone Police told newsmen at their headquarters, George Street, in Freetown that the eleven students at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone are under custody for allegations of undertaking secret society activities.
In his statement, the ACP Abdul Moijoi, attached west of Freetown, affirmed that the SLP was profoundly following the sad development over weekend among some students cults.
He noted that the information was revealed to them by anonymous sources before they visited one of the “unfinished buildings” at the mountainous campus area.
He added that few students suspects are aiding the police to carry out further investigations into the issue.
Meanwhile, CSP Brima Bangura of Freetown-east, highlighted some of the successes and challenges that had made so far.
He said one ex-military officer was arrested at one of the slum communities and was seen with a military uniform in the pretext of him being a security constable.
He added that the SLP are on top of the situation in all the matters under investigations. The effort is a bid to curb crime rates within the municipality of Freetown.
Commissioner Ibrahim Lahai, Head of Crimes Services, updated the correspondents that ten police officers had had unique forensic expert training at Kingtom.
He said their role and responsibility are to identify and verify critical criminal cases for the attention of judges and magistrates, and he added that the leadership of SLP and the government of Sierra Leone have provided some new handsets in order to ease the unprecedented challenges faced by the security sector over the years.
