MPs from both SLPP and APC have demanded the amendment of their welfare’s status.
In her statement the MP representing SLPP, Hon. Massy Gaiteh, has pleaded with the new Speaker of Parliament to amend MPs’ welfare issue.
According to Hon. Massy Gaiteh to elect young speakers means the welfare of their[ colleague] parliamentarians will be addressed.
“We the new MPs are suffering.
Our salaries are nothing to write home about. Please Mr Speakers address our Welfare conditions,” Hon Gaiteh sated.
She thanked all MPs who voted for Speaker and Deputy Speaker in the Chambers of Parliament.
In her submissions, the All People’s Congress party’s MP from Tonkolili district, Hon Rose Marie Bangura, thanked the newly elected Speakers and urged them to address the issue of MPs’ welfare.
Hon Rose Marie Bangura also lavished praises on the two speakers and urged them to demonstrate their willingness to upholding democracy and respecting opposition positive criticisms.
The Opposition Member of Parliament from Lumley, Hon Mamoud Kamara, similarly urged the new House Speakers to look into the welfare of MPs.
He thanked the two speakers to be the youngest speakers since the formation of Parliament.
The MP further said that the SLPP and APC MPs and Sierra Leoneans have much expectations for the young speakers elected in Parliament.
According to Hon Mamoud Kamara, he said people of Lumley community are very much happy for the position Hon Tawa Conteh is holding adding that the Deputy Speaker has been a great redeemer of the people in recent past.
He called on the Speakers to ensure that opposition MPs should never again thrown out of parliament to be replaced by none MPs.
In her statement Hon Rosy Kanu said Hon. Tawa is a strong advocate for women. She urged him to look into and address the welfare of MPs.
In her statement, the MP from Moyamba District, Hon Veronica Kadie Sesay, also expressed thanks and appreciation to the two Speakers and urged them to make Sierra Leone proud.
Hon. Veronica Kadie Sesay commends the elevation of the three women into the leadership.
“If youngsters can do it, women can do it; women should not be muzzled,” she said.
She stated that MPs should be prioritized especially with regards on their welfare status.
