As the Bumeh dump site wastes almost cover up the main street, it has become a threat to the health and lives of all citizens in the east of Freetown.
Just few days ago SABSCO company reportedly disposed of a container filled with some expired Sardines at the waste site, a situation that has raised serious public debate.
Some members of the public have said authorities who supposed to have taken great care of the dump site could not do that. They are driving past the smelly dump site with escotic SUVs vehicles, showing a lack of care of the polluted environment.
Moses Kalokoh, a resident in the Bumeh community said, their Bumbeh vicinity has become toxic for dwellers and the smelly dirt is causing a threat for their well-being.
He said many a time they report to Freetown City Council (FCC) about the horrible situation on the waste spillage at the Bumbeh but all their concerns have not been addressed.
Kalokoh narrated that just few days ago, government vehicle WAKA Fine Bus nearly stocked up on the street close to the Bumeh waste.
He said the wastes sometimes clogged up the street at the Ackam community close to Ferry Junction in the east, thereby preventing traffic jam.
He said frantic efforts have also been made to alert the attention of Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) over the potential danger at the Bumbeh waste site.
He said the authorities however also gave deaf ears to their calls.
Moses Kalokoh stressed that they were informed few years ago about government s plans to relocate the dumpe site but yet that has not come into reality.
“Our problems as a nation is that, politicians are campaigning on a platform to change things and they would always talk nice to the electorates but after the elections, they ignote what they on their priorities promised.”
Hasanatu Wurie, who is also a Bumbeh community resident expressed dismay over authorities neglect of the Bumeh waste dump site, stating that the situation in the community is becoming worse by day with the rubbish having the potential to block the whole street.
She also alleged that some business people who are in the habit of depositing plastic materials and toxic wastes should be discouraged from doing so.
She said such a bad practice has the propensity to cause illnesses for the dwellers.
“We are suffering from the cement dust wastes and as well as from the hazardous waste deposited at the Bumbeh “Wurie complained.
Pa Sullay Kabia who lives at Bumeh community blamed the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for their suffering,. He said the cement factory nearby the waste site produces uncontrollable dust and wastes, and is greatly affecting them while the dump site is negatively impacted them.
He said many efforts have been made to address the miserable situation they faced but to no avail since authorities don’t come to their aid.
“We want a Good Moses who can come and deliver us from this terrible condition. Indeed Bumeh has become a risky place for humans and vehicles,” he said.
A taxi driver also told this medium they often stop for a while at the Ferry Junction axis because of the blockage at times at the Bumeh waste dump site.
He however called on the authorities to intervene and subsequently relocate the dump site elsewhere.
“I was ashamed when my friend came into the country from Ghana when and asked me, why would the authorities encourage the dump site to exist in the middle of the city where the masses are. This is terrible,” Aminata Koroma who onboard the Waka Fine Bus said yesterday.
She blamed the council for the dismal situation the waste siste has exposed the country to.
Humans, she said, have also used the dump site as a source of income by collecting rubbers and plastic wastes for sale, a situation that angered many citizens.
