In a pivotal meeting held on October 6, 2024, at East End Paddies, the Western Urban East DistrictSecretary,Thonkla, convened all the eleven (11) constituency secretaries and PROs of the APC from the East District to address pressing concerns in the district.
While emphasizing the importance of a political harmony and unity within the district, their discussions led by Secretary Thonkla stressed the need for APC bloggers and media outlets to shift their focus towards national issues which are pertinent to the party’s stance against the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP).
The meeting called for an end to all negative rhetorics being directed at APC leaders, thus urging members to maintain a united front. Additionally, the political ideology within the East District was underscored as participants emphasized the necessity of adhering to the established political structures while prioritizing local decisions over external influences.
They reiterated that unity and respect are paramount in moving the party and the district forward, particularly in combating social media attacks which are targeting key APC political figures.
As the meeting progressed, a vision for the political future of the East District emerged. Attendees called for the strategic appointment of local representatives from the East District to ministerial and other appointed positions when the party assumes governance, thereby ensuring that the district can be benefited. They highlighted the importance of establishing a dedicated district party office as there is currently no such office in the East District.
They also stressed the need for greater inclusion of women and young congress leaders in decision-making processes to ensuring a more comprehensive representation of the district’s demographics.
Most importantly, Thonkla informed attendees, especially the Pros, on the contemporary issues facing the ruling SLPP Party and their deadlock in governance.
He cited instances that illustrate the dire state of affairs the SLPP government has imposed on the country.
Key issues discussed included the financial mismanagement by the SLPP government with notably the alleged forgery of receipts by the Office of the President, which led to the dismissal of the Auditor General after these findings were included in an audit report.
The recent rejection of an IMF loan bid which has led to a diminished trust due to reported financial irregularities within the SLPP administration and other issues were also addressed, alongside discussions about the planned review of the national constitution and the declining financial aid from international donors to Sierra Leone due to a lack of confidence in the current government.
As the APC prepares to face upcoming challenges, the focus remains clear, fostering unity within the party while advocating for transparency and accountability at the national level formed party the meeting’s deliberations.
The meeting concluded with a grateful acknowledgment of the financial support from Chairman Tucker and Treasurer Korombo, while signifying the collective resolve of the members to strengthen the APC’s presence and effectiveness in the Western Urban region.
