The question of whether the country’s main political opposition party, the All Peoples Congress (APC) will maintain its stance to not partake in the governance of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s party (SLPP) has been a topical discussion on different social media platforms as well as both the traditional and electronic media.
Recently, the APC party held a meeting at their party’s national headquarters where they agreed on a resolution signed by members elected to represent the party in all spheres of governance to boycott parliamentary sittings and others, unless the former Minister of Information and Communication under the erstwhile regime of former President Koroma, Hon. Mohamed Bangura of Karene district who blatantly disagreed to append his signature by giving flimsy excuses.
As members of parliament elected will today 13th July, 2023 subscribe to their oaths of office at the well of parliament, the decision of the APC will lead the country into a party legislature and which some well meaningful Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad have viewed as a death trap to the country’s democracy that will be frowned at by the international community as well as forefathers of the principle of democracy, the United States of America (USA).
The Leader and presidential candidate of the APC, Dr. Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara yesterday at his residence situated at Hill Station convened a meeting with all members elected to strengthen their resistance to refuse any form of participating in the government of the president re-elected, Dr. Julius Maada Bio who he strongly believed did not win the presidential polls genuinely but via rigging and using excessive force to bully and intimidate him and members and supporters of the APC.
It could be recalled that the 2018 and 2023 presidential candidate of APC summoned members of the press both external and internal to update them about the outcome of the 24th June multi-tier but to the dismay of democracy, armed military personnel stormed the building of the APC party and allegedly fired teargas and live rounds bullets. But according to the SLP media personnel, they fired teargas gas to disperse supporters whom he said blocked the main highway in jubilation of that their party flagbearer had won the election and proved to be obstinate and that led to such mayhem.
Dr. Samura Kamara just after the announcement made by the National Returning Officer and Chief Electoral Commissioner of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone, Mohamed K. Konneh that by the power vested in him by the country’s 1991 Constitution, Dr. Julius Maada Bio pulled the highest votes and even passed the threshold limit of 55%, immediately addressed the international observers that he did not agree with the results and which he described as skewed result.
If only the strong main opposition maintain their stance, according to political scientists, will be an eyesore for democracy and will dent the image of the country to the outside world and as things continue to unfold this medium will keep their readers abreast to the current political climate.
