In his continuous strides to complement President Bio’s Free Quality Education project, the former Speaker of ECOWAS Parliament, Hon. Sidie Mohamed Tunis, has supported Fourah Bay College (FBC) administration with ten thousand dollars for the pavement and installation of solar lights on the campus.
He gave the support on Wednesday 28th November 2024 after the Deputy Registrar made a compelled appeal to him while he was at FBC to unveil just constructed bus stop (airport) and the entrance and exist gates at FBC.
The airport and gate projects funded by Hon. Tunis cost five hundred million new Leones.
Making his statement at the unveiling ceremony at FBC, Hon. Tunis started off by reflecting on his political journey from serving as Minority Whip of the Fourth Parliament, Leader of Government Business in the Fifth Parliament and becoming the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament.
He said he is reminded that education is the undeniable truth, stressing that education is the corner stone of progress in any nation as it is the bedrock upon which nations are built.
“President Bio’s Free Quality Education initiative has provided millions of young people with access to free quality education, breaking barriers that have long hindered the potential of our youth. Over the years, I have taken deliberate steps to complement President Bio’s transformative free quality education programme by investing in the lives of students and supporting initiatives that foster academic excellence and leadership,” he said.
Dr. Tunis said he has been a constant supporter of FBC Students’ Union governments in which during the tenure of the first female Students’ Union president, he supported the establishment of the students café that has since become a vital resource for research and academic growth.
He added that, “Recently, I awarded 15 scholarships to graduating students who were in dire need of support to ensure they complete their academic journey. Also, through the One Love Salone Foundation established with family, we have committed two million new Leones annually to support university students nationwide. This initiative aligns with the free quality education programme’s vision of equitable access to education for all sierra Leones.”
The former ECOWAS Speaker urged the students to reflect on the role they can play in building a strong Sierra Leone. Also, he called on the students to take full advantage of the opportunities before them.
Therefore, he encouraged them to ensure the immediate implementation of the said projects in order to ensure a conducive learning environment for all students, lecturers and other users of the campus.
Earlier, Dr. Patrick H.H Walker, as the chairman of the occasion said, Hon. Tunis is not an alumnus of Fourah Bay College but has always been supporting the university in diverse ways.
Therefore, he cautioned the SLPP Students’ body and the Students’ Union executive to remember that there is more to come if they manage and implement the projects well. He said if the projects are well managed and well implemented that will give Hon. Tunis the courage to say he started something so that let him continue.
Making his presentation, the Students’ Union President of FBC, Alfred Sesay, catalogued all the projects that have been supported by Hon. Tunis.
He highlighted that Hon. Tunis has supported the constructions of the entrance and exist gates and the bus stop (airport) at FBC.
He added that the former Speaker supported his administration to undertake nationwide Kush sensitizations and also gave scholarships to graduating students in 2022 and 2023.
Adding his voice, the Deputy Registrar at Fourah Bay College, Mr, Brima Bah, appealed to Hon. Tunis to support the university to continue with their pavement projects and also help them with the installation of solar lights. He thanked Hon. Tunis and his team for swiftly responding to their request.
