In a passionate address to Parliament, Hon. Aruna Papay Solomon Larkoh from Tonkolili District expressed deep concerns about the district’s exclusion from 2024 national budget. Speaking during the budget deliberations, he lamented the lack of attention given to Tonkolili District despite its significant contributions to Sierra Leone’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
“Tonkolili District is the breadbasket of this nation, it is contributing immensely to our national GDP. Yet, it continues to be neglected, as evident in this year’s budget,” Hon. Larkoh stated emphatically.
He pointed out that Tonkolili was only mentioned in the budget document on page 10 and paragraph 36, under the heading, discussion of partnership and progressive economic agreements.
But when it comes to the allocation of state resources, he argued, the district is sometimes left out.
He said significant development projects like road infrastructure are not allocated to the district.
Tonkolili is the opposition district stronghold and many believe that is why it has been sidelined by the ruling government, SLPP party.
“Pages 37, paragraphs 133 to 135, talk about township roads. Yet, Tonkolili’s district headquarters, Magburaka remains deprived of meaningful road construction works.
While we appreciate the efforts of the former government in improving some roads, such as the Bo Road, Ferry Road, and Makeni Road, much more needs to be done,” he remarked.
“My expectations for Tonkolili in this year’s budget were high, yet they have been unmet. I call on the government to recognize the district’s pivotal role in our economy and allocate resources equitably,” Hon. Larkoh concluded.
