The National Stadium’s renovation is long overdue.
Since the renovation project started four years ago, in 2019, it is still incomplete.
In an interview with some soccer fans in the country, they have strongly revealed to this medium that the national stadium is still an unfinished project.
It is still undergoing some prolonged overhaul works.
“We are tired with the delay, sports is slowly dying especially football.
The China’s donor project is still undone for,” fans have explained.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Sports, had held discussions on November 28, 2024, with the Chinese delegation, led by Ambassador Wang Qing with key focus on rehabilitating the National Stadium.
The dialogues emphasized key developments in the project, which aims to modernize the venue and elevate it the stadium to international standards.
Ambassador Wang Qing stressed China’s commitment to advancing the project, including plans to expand the stadium’s seating capacity to align with global requirements.
The proposed enhancements aim to make sure that the facility is fit for hosting international events while preserving its historical significance.
Minister of Sports Madam Augusta James-Teima together with National Sports Authority Executive Director Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, have underscored the project’s position to Sierra Leone’s national identity and sports development.
“This renovation is not just about groundwork; it represents a renewed opportunity for Sierra Leone to showcase its potential on the global stage,” said Dr. Abdulai. The teamwork reflects the deepening partnership between Sierra Leone and China, with both parties expressing optimism about the transformative impacts of the stadium’s modernization.
No date has been announced for the reopening the only national stadium.
