As part of its 2023 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report, Orange Sierra Leone outlined key steps taken toward environmental sustainability, showcasing its commitment to a greener future through various impactful initiatives.
In May 2023, Orange Sierra Leone took a significant step in its environmental action plan by planting 3,000 trees at the Mortomeh Mudslide site. This initiative is part of the company’s efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change and contribute to environmental restoration in the area. The tree-planting project underscores Orange’s dedication to sustainable practices and community resilience.
Orange Sierra Leone continues to prioritize renewable energy in its operations, with 72% of its sites now powered by solar energy. Additionally, 20% of the company’s overall business operations currently rely on renewable sources. The company has ambitious plans to fully solarize all its shops, offices, and data centers, further reducing its carbon footprint and leading the charge in sustainable business practices.
To raise awareness of eco-friendly practices and promote a culture of sustainability, Orange Sierra Leone actively engaged its employees during World Environment Day 2023. The event included a keynote address by the former Minister of Environment, who emphasized collective responsibility in protecting the environment and adopting sustainable habits within the company and beyond.
In a collaborative effort with the Commonwealth Games Association and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Orange Sierra Leone participated in a beach cleanup and tree planting along the Lumley-Aberdeen beach coastal line. This initiative aimed to enhance coastal sustainability while promoting environmental awareness and action within the local community.
Orange Sierra Leone’s commitment to sustainability was recognized at the 7th Annual Shout Climate Africa Awards in November 2023. CEO Sekou Amadou Bah was honored with the Environmental Champion CEO of the Year award for his leadership in advancing environmental initiatives. The company also received the Carbon Zero Champion Mobile Company of the Year award for its strides in reducing the environmental impact of its operations.
These initiatives reflect Orange Sierra Leone’s dedication to building a sustainable future while contributing positively to the country’s environmental goals. Through tree planting, renewable energy projects, and community engagement, the company continues to make significant progress toward a greener and more sustainable Sierra Leone.
