“Today might not be your turn for appointment but your turn will surely come”, says the deputy leader of government business as he was making a submission on Tuesday 20th February 2024 during the approval of a presidential appointee.
That was during the approval of the following posts and personalities: Deputy Director General of Sierra Leone Road Authority (SLRA), the chairman of the Sierra Leone Commercial Bank and the deputy Minister of Information and Civic Education in the Well of Parliament.
Hon Silikie said lots of SLPP members are yet to benefit from government’s appointments but are still supporting the party in its development strikes and during political campaigns.
The MP said those who have been appointed by the President are lucky but are not the luckiest, adding that they should work actively to ensure that the President’s agenda succeeds.
“We are not responsible for the development, we are not SLRA, we are not Council and we are not members of the executive.
“Nobody plays oversight over us; that’s why you bow before us as MPs, accord us with that respect we so deserve.
The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) member of parliament, Hon Brima Masaray, reminded his colleagues members of parliament, saying that, “as MPs let us don’t forget our primary responsibility which is represent the people.
“We are under oath to serve humanity and we must respect the oath that we have subscribed to.”
The SLP MP also cautioned the presidential nominees to work for the best interest of the people for which they had been appointed.
“If you don’t work diligently, posterity will judge you all in the future. Go and do the work. Don’t go and do otherwise,” he said.
The MP also called on the attention of SLRA’s deputy director general to consider the poor situation of the roads in Kenema and Kono which he described as death- traps.
Hon Brima Mansaray also appealed for a reduction of interest rates by the Sierra Leone commercial banks.
