Dr. Ibrahim L. Stevens, the former Deputy Governor has now been appointed as the substantive Governor of the Central Bank of Sierra Leone.
Dr. Stevens succeeds Prof. Kelfala Kallon who has been on indefinite leave since March this year and has held sensitive positions for a very long time and has brought a wealth of experience. He is a Senior Economist from the Bank of England and holds a PhD in Financial Economics from Durham University which buttress the fact that he is not only qualified but a brain to reckon with.
It’s almost a year now since the former Governor of Bank of Sierra Leone; Professor Keifala Kallon was sent on leave by President Julius Maada Bio and the position has remained vacant all this while for which many concerned citizens have been insisting that a substantive Governor be appointed.
Professor Kallon who held that position for couple of years, was aptly criticized by many Sierra Leoneans for his economic policies which they thought would have at least improved the struggling economy but only worsened the problems, including but not limited to insistent scarcity of foreign currencies (forex, high inflation rate and that even the introduction of the highly anticipated new currency notes didn’t for once yield any dividend, which effect Sierra Leoneans are still bearing.
While still on leave, the current Deputy Bank Governor Dr. Ibrahim L. Stevens marvelously and stoutly acted in that capacity to the admiration of many economic experts, some of whom had even recommended for his elevation as Bank Governor.
For those who know and have worked with Dr. Ibrahim Stevens in other areas before his present appointment have insisted that they have no iota of doubt that he can perform judging from what he has done so far during his short stint at the helm of affairs at the Bank.
“Putting all sentiments aside and without bluff, Dr. Stevens can effectively deliver with efficiency and proficiency once given the chance or opportunity because he has the requisite qualification, capacity and capability and more so when he believes in teamwork,” one of his admirers stated.
