A big football league is to soon commence at the Trade Centre Field at Kissy Dockyard in the east end of Freetown.
The mega-community football contest is expected to roll heads with sixteen-teams, making the first round.
The league is thought to be a maiden one at Kissy Dockyard field which is well-known as Trade Centre owned by Eastern Lions, a successful premier league club in Sierra Leone.
Communities in the east and west will be competing at the Lions’ grounds with the golden prize, though yet undisclosed, set to hugely impact the winners of the grand trophy.
The brain behind the league is Mr. Mohamed Kargbo, aka, Jojolie.
He is Eastern Lions’ field caretaker and a football veteran.
Kargbo throws light on his sound idea on why he and others have decided to come up with such a league.
“We want to spur Dockyard community up by bringing back old football players in the game. It’s about having fun and ensuring that there is peace in the community,” says Jonjolie.
“But, we are seeking out for fund to run the league; the last league we organized at Kontorlor was amazing.”
In that league, he went on, a team comprising mix of old players, Western Area Veteran, won the Kontorlor Veteran League organized in 2021 at Approved School at Kontorlor community in the east of Freetown.
Mr. Kargbo, otherwise, Jojonlie, roughly named out the communities and teams that have registered to compete for Kissy Dock yard Veteran League Trophy.
Among them are: Dockyard community, Area Best, Fisher Lane, Rokupa Veteran, Wellington, Calaba Town, Mount Aureol, Ginger Hall, etc.
“Our most pressing demand left is to get somebody who’ll help us buy medals and trophies,” Jojolie said.
The league is going to be run by long-time east end football lovers like Jojolie and few of his men.
Jojolie is the chairman of the upcoming Veteran Competition.
And Sahr J. Smith, the competition’s organizing secretary, is working hard to get community teams prepared ahead of the opening ceremony come Saturday’s 23 September, 2023.
“We shall be preaching peace among the competing community teams when the league will have commenced,” says J. Smith.
