On Thursday 7th November 2024, it marked another significant moment as the Opposition Chief Whip, Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara inevitably demonstrated patriotism during the Presidential Nominees Approval in the well.
During the proceedings, he robustly admonished the public that the issue of environmental degradation has become peculiar to the extent that it is inhibiting the existence of the citizens.
Additionally, Opposition Chief Whip was reminiscing on how the capital and other parts of the country used to have many mangroves but these beautiful mangroves have been destroyed by people due to erection of dwellings. “When they do this, as they cut the mangroves, communities suffer the consequences.”
He proceeded that they as leaders had to take tougher decisions to save the environment irrespective of the political affiliations.
He emphasized that the issue of environmental protection should be de-politicized as that is the only way to help exonerate the nation from its many hazardous activities by the people. He said the suffering of people is man- made.
Moreover, Opposition Chief Whip equally illuminated on the current power outage that has become the order of the day in the country.
He stated that a country like Sierra Leone is blessed with enormous natural resources; rain, sun, wind which are essential sources of energy.
Yet, he said, “the country is depending on Karpownership for power, that’s adding insult to the suffering of the citizens.”
He maintained that no matter the cost to run up Bumbuna Phase Two, it is far better than the Turkish karpowership.
This is because, he said, the Bumbuna hdro-dam is a bonafide property to the nation.
“No matter which political party you belong to, we haven’t done enough for our people,” he made this statement in connection with the unfortunate situations unfolding in the country. As he believes the people are yet to realize enough from what they as leaders ought to do.
He said it’s high time for them to give back to society.
He made it explicitly clear that celebrating Leone Power as a private entity sounds infuriating as the country possesses innumerable resources that are more vital to provide stable energy for the citizens.
He said he is calling on the government and other entities to prioritize the local content policy.
