Some external visitors in parliament in its sittings have urged the government and the opposition to save Sierra Leone from the current economic bad situation.
One Tamba S. Saidu says Sierra Leone is currently experiencing serious economic challenges.
He said that the only institution that will ensure things to turn around for the better is parliament and its MPs.
Tamba said the auditor general’s report clearly shows inefficiency and ineffectiveness of respective ministries, departments and agencies.
He said parliament has enormous powers to ensure that the billions of leones missing from government’s ministries and agencies’ accounts be recouped to the consolidated revenue fund.
He stressed that the only thing that parliament cannot do is to turn a woman to a man.
But, he added, the national constitution gives parliament the power to withdraw state funds from other accounts in a bid t to protect the country’s resources.
Amid Saffa, another public visitor in parliament, said parliament is the stem of the nation when it comes to upholding the principles of accountability and transparency.
He said the manner in which the country is heading to is worth paying greater attention to.
“Food commodities are astronomically increasing day- by-day, the transportation cost is also adding more burden on citizens.
“MDAs are using government funds haphazardly without recourse,” he claimed.
He blamed the security sector and the judiciary for paying little attention on the grave economic situation faced by Sierra Leoneans,” Saffa said.
Currently, the Parliamentary Public Account Committee (PAC) is seriously vetting MDAs based on Audit Service’s latest findings.
Hawa Sankoh who is frequently visiting the law house said government should nip it in the bud – the rampant embezzlement of government’s fund by politicians.
Sankoh said the people are currently experiencing what she described as “unending suffering.”
The deputy leader of government business, Hon Bashiru Silikie, asked the president to remove heads of ministries and agencies who are notoriously defaulting on their functions to serve the people.
Other MPs talked about how MDAs are derailing the developments of the country thus, leaving the masses in communities in limbo.
