Government Spokesperson Alhaji Alpha Kanu, has shockingly told journalists that the Lungi Bridge is not part of President Bio’s Agenda.
He made this revelation on Tuesday 6th August 2024 at the Administrative Building in Parliament.
According to Alpha Khan the government had discussed with the investors regarding the Lungi Bridge construction but said looking at the number of vehicles plying from Lungi to Freetown they are very minimal and so government cannot invest such a huge sum of money amounting to $ 2 billion.
He said the Lungi Bridge, if constructed, would have been a toll bridge, adding that the government is still in negotiations with the investors to see how they can settle to terms.
He cited the big 5 Game Changers as government priority which will be implemented in the next four years.
It could be recalled that President Julius Maada Bio was campaigning in 2018 on constructing a bridge between Freetown and Lungi.
And it was very much a topical issue during and after the campaign periods, but down the line, the issue for the construction faded out.
Few years back, in Bio’s first term rule, supporters of the SLPP prepared T-shirts in readiness for the construction launch of the bridge dubbed as Lungi bridge.
Several people from Kafu Bullom are believed to have expressed frustration over the failure by the government on holding up to its promise.
The late President Tejan Kabba campaign had had an intention to construct the bridge as he also voiced it out but never materialized.
Many citizens have said the Lungi Bridge has become a tool for politician’s campaigns in the Port Loko axis.
Some citizens have added that their hopes of having a bridge linking Lungi to Freetown has been diminished again for the second term under the same party, SLPP.
The statements of Alhaji Alpha Khan has added a salt to the injuries of the inhabitants of Lungi.
The announcement by Alpha Khan comes at a time the few ferries the people rely on to crow them over are faulty with transport fares being increased lately causing a twin shock on passengers.
Residents of Lungi have described the government campaign promises as false to construct them a bridge.
