Officials from the Guma Valley Water Company have seriously accused the Ministry of Lands for shifting the green belt while people are destroying the water catchment area.
Speaking on an interactive session at the administrative building in Parliament, the Chairman of the Water Resources Committee in Parliament who doubles as the Chief Whip of Parliament, Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara said people keep destroying the catchment area at Charlotte and Mortham communities.
The Chairman has made it categorically clear that his committee will assist Guma Valley to demolish those houses that affect the distribution of water to communities in Freetown.
He said the water scarcity and inadequate access to clean water pose critical challenges in the country, especially in marginalized communities.
Hon. AKK informed that although efforts have been made to address these challenges, the unique circumstances and specific needs of indigenous communities require tailored strategies for sustainable water management.
In his submission, the Director General of Guma Valley Water Company, Maada Kpenge spoke on numerous challenges faced due to the activities of the Ministry in selling water catchment area lands.
He said one of the major obstacles faced by the institution is the puncture of forest reserve that produce water to the dams.
The Director revealed that most of the dams are under rehabilitation and others including the water dam on Allen Town.
He said over the years, the facility in Allen Town has not been working, but as part of the institution strides to provide water for the people they will take the water from Charlotte and Martham areas.
