It was a thunderous applauds from Parliamentarians across the aisle on Thursday 23rd January 2025 when the Leader of Government Business in Parliament, Matthew Sahr Nyuma advocated for wardrobe allowance for MPs in the Chambers of Parliament.
Nyuma was very much frank to request for their wardrobe allowance from the Speaker of Parliament, stating that dress code for MPs is very expensive, stating that the speaker should consider about their wardrobe allowances.
“Most of the dress we wore as MPs are expensive, most times our dress or suit one cannot buy it less than two thousand Leones. Other suit is four thousand Leones which I consider as very expensive and it is time for the speaker to use his good office to address on the MPs wardrobe allowance,” he said.
According to Nyuma, the if the speaker say MPs should not wear short sleeve and enter the Well of parliament and speaker should consider to address the wardrobe allowance for MPs.
Earlier, the Speaker of Parliament, Hon Solomon Thomas warn MPs from wearing short sleeves and enter the Well of parliament.
Speaker said his ruling stands at the moment until MPs go down to room one to discuss MPs welfare issues.
The issues of the welfare of MPs has been raised in the chamber of parliament.
MPs compare other parliaments in the subregion when it has to do with their welfare.
They said the entire subregion, only Sierra Leone has the least salary payment.
The MPs proposals for salary and benefits increase from MPs was reportedly sent to the minister of finance but status of that allege document remain doubtful.
Looking at the MPs welfare, many have considered their salaries as meager when it compared to their roles and responsibilities as MPs.
The issue has been deferred to committee room one Parliament for discussion.
