On Monday 25th February 24, Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr met with the Irish Ambassador to Sierra Leone and Head of Mission, His Excellency Aidan Fitzpatrick, accompanied by Mark Finegan, Director of the Civil Society Unit in the Development Cooperation and Africa Division of Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs.
The mayor and the diplomats discussed areas of collaboration, including the Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant in Freetown, which processes liquid waste into briquettes, an affordable and sustainable alternative to traditional fuels.
With 82% of Freetown’s households relying on wood or charcoal for cooking, this initiative seeks to address deforestation by providing an alternative fuel source.
And with World Bank’s support, Freetown City Council of Sierra Leone is also advancing plans to establish a similar Faecal Sludge Treatment plant east of the capital.
