In a recent announcement, Hon. Mohamed Bangura, the Member of Parliament representing Karene District, has revealed his intention to resign from both his parliamentary post and the All People’s Congress (APC) party within the coming three months.
During an exclusive and revealing interview, Bangura illuminated the motivations behind his decision, expressing a desire to transition to People’s Development Party (PDP) as an ordinary member.
When pressed to give reasons behind his departure from the APC, Hon. Bangura maintained tight-lipped, stating that his choice is deeply personal. Nevertheless, he conveyed an unwavering belief in the PDP’s capability to emerge victorious in the 2028 general elections, signaling, yet again, a pivotal moment in his political journey.
He articulated a vision to see a rise of his dream party to be a formidable entity in the competitive arena of Sierra Leonean politics.
He is poised to challenge the entrenched dominance of the nation’s two major parties, APC & SLPP.
Hon. Bangura’s political narrative has been anything but extraordinary.
He began his journey as a member of the People’s Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC) and ascended the ranks to eventually lead the United Democratic Movement (UDM) party as its chairman and standard-bearer.
His political odyssey took another turn when he joined the APC, where he fulfilled the crucial role of Minister of Information and Communications before being elected as a Member of Parliament for Karene District in the northern territories of Sierra Leone.
Reflecting on his deep-rooted connection to the PDP, Bangura reminisced on the demise of his late uncle, Mr. Thaimu Bangura, who played a vital role as one of the party’s founding members.
The establishment of the PDP holds a special place in his heart, as it was officially launched in his presence when he was merely seven years old, he traced back.
This impending move symbolizes a return to his political genesis and familial legacy.
Upon receiving official confirmation of his membership in the PDP, Hon. Bangura plans to relinquish his position within the APC and vacate his parliamentary seat.
He envisions a transformative future for the PDP, aspiring to revamp and rebrand the party into a potent third political force in Sierra Leone.
He harbors aspirations of becoming the party’s flagbearer in the anticipated 2028 elections, fully convinced that, and with the mandate of his peers, he, is sure, he could secure a landmark victory in both the presidential and parliamentary contests.
Hon. Bangura’s impending resignation, from the APC, has heralded a momentous shift in Sierra Leone’s political dynamics, as he transitions from one of the country’s principal opposition parties to a smaller, albeit, they are themselves ambitious political factions.
Should his plans unfold as envisioned, this move could catalyze significant political realignments and discussions in the lead-up to the critical 2028 elections, marking a new chapter in the country’s governance and political engagement.
