Krio man say, “yai nor dae tote, but e sabi hebi load,” meaning the eye does not carry load but knows its weight.
This is exactly the scenario the wise bird has discovered currently unfolding in one of the oldest parties in the sub-region; the governing Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP).
Things appear glittering from the outside than what is really happening from the inside which are completely different.
Very recently, the fact finding bird was flying very close to the SLPP secretariat when he overheard some party supporters grumbling bitterly that things are not working well within the party structure.
Upon hearing this type of grumbling, the most respected animal went closer and closer and perched at one of the extreme corners of the office to get more of the gist to avoid being accused of giving false news to his people.
If the old bird’s ears did not deceive him, he vividly heard some party members claiming that His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio is planning to bring forward or rather favoring an unknown person from nowhere as his successor.
However, the bird gathered that the party veteran politicians are in sharp opposition of such idea, vowing that it will not work under their watch.
One senior member of the party suggested to the bird that, the SLPP should learn a lesson from the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) party, given that the latter faced lot of challenges prior, during and after the last general elections which he insisted is still affecting them.
He cited the case of Dr. Samura’s selection for the APC standard bearer position by former President Ernest Bai Koroma which according to him brought serious problem within the party’s structure, because many view his decision was wrong.
The bird as usual went out to sound the views of supporters, members and sympathizers of the party.
Almost all those he came in contact with said the same thing, that the party must be very careful in choosing a leader.
They emphasized that the incoming leader must be prepared to handle all pressing issues concerning the party, in essence, someone who is willing and ready to sacrifice his all and all.
According to them, if the party fails to do the needful, they will end up being in opposition like the APC did during the 2018 elections.
If a successor is chosen that is not favoured by the people it will undoubtedly spell doom for that party, because it will destroy its chances of winning any election.
By all indications, things are not really ok in the SLPP so, they must be careful more so when they are about to hold their lower level elections very shortly.
The Patient Bird is patiently waiting with keen interest to witness how those events will unfold.
