The All Peoples Congress (APC) party member of Parliament who doubles as the Public Relations Officer of the opposition in Parliament, says “lots of our people in remote communities are born in darkness and sadly died in darkness.”
The MP made the submissions on Friday when debating on approval of Presidential nominees assigned to the energy sector.
He said electricity is key for the development of any nation, adding that the poor supply of electricity in the country has resulted to the perenial sufferings of many.
According to Hon Unpha Koroma the appointees should find ways to get more solar panels which, he believes, would help most deprived communities across Sierra Leone.
He said the APC is always supportive and synonymous to development of Sierra Leone and so the party loves people who can deliver good for the country.
Hon Koroma pointed out that many a times those approved in Parliament don’t help government to succeed but only sit in their offices doing nothing.
He maintained that appointees should prioritize development and work towards meeting accountability and transparency while executing their duties.
The Member of Parliament from Bo District, Hon Kekura Vandy, has said electricity generation and distribution is not cheap.
He said the Ministry has made frantic efforts in terms of electricity generation and has put more efforts in that sector ever before.
Hon Vandy confirmed, however, that, the Bumbuna Hydro dam, is currently just providing small megawatts.
He said the problems of electricity in Freetown is as a result of the water level at the hydro dam.
The dam used to generate 50 megawatts and it has reduced to 17 megawatts which has created this problem in the city.
He said the bulk of the electricity is dropping in Makeni and Magburaka and the balance in Freetown.
The MP said all over the world electricity has problems, stating that Sierra Leone is not exception.
He assured of surmounting the challenges in the not too distant future.
