The Girls Empowerment Network Sierra Leone (GEN-SL) on Saturday March 8,2025 in Waterloo joined the global community in commemorating International Women’s Day (IWD) with a vibrant celebration held at Rogbana Hall, Kissi Town, Waterloo, under the theme: For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment.
The event brought together community leaders, activists, young girls, and stakeholders to reflect on progress made in advancing gender equality and empowering women and girls across Sierra Leone.
Delivering his keynote address, Mr. Matthew S. Kanu, Country Director of GEN-SL, provided a historical overview of the organization. He noted that GEN-SL has been at the forefront of women and girls’ empowerment for over thirteen years, despite numerous challenges.
The Girls Empowerment Network Sierra Leone has played a pivotal role in promoting gender equality through advocacy, education, and community engagement. Over the years, we have remained committed to empowering girls and celebrating the contributions of women to national development, Mr. Kanu stated.
As part of the celebration, Mr. Kanu analyzed the background and impact of women’s contributions to society, highlighting the significance of recognizing and honoring outstanding female role models. He then presented a special award to Mrs. Michaela Alieu, who was named Woman of the Year 2025” in recognition of her exceptional service and dedication to community development.
Upon receiving her certificate, Mrs. Alieu expressed heartfelt gratitude, calling on women everywhere to rise and take their place in society.
I am deeply honored to receive this recognition. I dedicate this award to all women across the world. Let us continue to stand tall and strong, just like men, in every corner of society. We have the ability, the voice, and the power to make change happen, she said.
The event also featured panel discussions, and exhibitions highlighting the achievements of women-led initiatives. Participants echoed the need for continued advocacy and stronger policies to protect the rights of women and girls, while promoting their full inclusion in all sectors of society.
