“Mr Speaker, if this House does not take stringent measures or strong action to protect the Rokel River it extinct because it facing severe threat,” Deputy Leader of the All People’s Congress (APC) Hon Aaron Koroma expressed fear.

He made the statement yesterday while standing on Standing Orders 23 in the Well of parliament.

He said if something is not done to stop the illegal mining activities he referred to as attack  Rokel River there is a likelihood of losing the country’s precious waters.

He stressed that the River has depleted in the way that the country will lose it future.

Hon Aaron therefore called on the Speaker to invite the relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies especially the Ministry of Environment in the Chambers of Parliament to answer relevant questions regarding the issue.

The lawmaker said this is not the first time such concerns have been raised, as residents in northern district of Tonkolili have persistently called for immediate action against those misusing the Rokel River.

Though the river was a vital resource of water for the majority of residents in the District, it has of late faced a pressing crisis that demands immediate attention.

“This river has historically been a source of fresh water for daily needs and a cherished space for families to gather and spend quality time,” he recalled.

However, the deteriorating condition of the river threatens both the community’s health and its way of life.

It is imperative for local and national authorities, along with community members, to take decisive action to address this urgent issue.

The persistent mining of gold along the river by local and foreign miners is negatively affecting residents, exposing them to drinking unpurified water.

This inhuman act is a call to action for all stakeholders, including government officials, NGOs, and community members.

By prioritizing these immediate actions, Sierra Leone can work towards restoring the health of the river, ensuring it continues to provide for the needs of current and future generations. Collective efforts are essential for preserving this vital resource and enhancing the quality of life for all community members.

The crisis facing residents living around and along the Rokel River is a pressing issue that requires immediate and swift action. By following these detailed steps, the elders and community members can work together to protect this vital resource.

The health of the river is not only crucial for the present generation but also for the future well-being of the entire community.

Through collaboration, education, and advocacy, it is possible to restore and preserve the Rokel River for years to come.
