Dozens of members of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) have confided in this medium that the Lower Level elections held in Kenema especially in Constituency 19 was neither free nor fair.
“We want rerun of those elections,” they protested.
The irate members told Africa24 that they have complained the matter to the Political Parties Regulatory Commission (PPRC) that “their party stakeholders only submitted a list of executive to them without actually conducting elections, a development they said has never happened in the SLPP before.”
According to one SLPP supporters from Kenema, “we are going to give what SLPP wants in the next elections if such blatant disregard of elections process and procedures are not reversed.”
“Some constituencies where elections were conducted were crooked especially in Constituencies 13, 14, 18 and 19 respectively,” one Rogers asserted.
What is more disturbing according to Rogers most of them that wanted to contest for either zonal or constituency executive positions were only informed about the executive list prepared by some crooked individuals.
“There is no more democracy in the SLPP. This is not our SLPP we used to know. This is the first time elections were conducted almost in all the districts with irregularities,” Hawa Massaquoi told this press. She said that they are in complete darkness looking given that they could really understand how the party is conducting electioneering process at party level.
“The lower level elections are just coronations. It is not reflecting the will of the people in their communities. Who is responsible for all such anomalies in the party remain doubtful,” Massaquoi lamented.
She disclosed that if the party failed to get it right at this moment, there is likelihood it will go into opposition after the next general elections in 2028.
Another aggrieved member Tamba Senesie from Kono District also revealed similar undemocratic elections process in that district, even though few areas were peaceful.
“Nobody listen to us. It seems as if the APC tactics is been implemented just for them to take over power in 2028. This is scary to us as supporters. We are feeling betrayed,” Senesie said.
Many other irate SLPP members expressed similar sentiments and fear the ugly development will militate against them as a party in national elections if the party hierarchy fails to address it swiftly once and for all.
