The opposition Whip in Parliament who also serves as a Member of Parliament from Kambia District, Hon Abdul Karim Kamara (AKK), has disclosed to this medium that, in other to build the much needed confidence of Sierra Leoneans on the ongoing treason trial, “live media coverage on the hearing could be the best option for consideration by the judicial system”.
Hon Kamara said the live-media coverage on the hearing could reduce the political tension, adding that “the public do not have confidence in the country’s judicial system”.
He stressed that the live media coverage will boost the confidence of the general public and will discourage public speculations and perceptions on the ongoing event, especially so when it involves the former President.
Hon Kamara makes a case that it is the President that appoints the Chief Justice and he the president told Sierra Leoneans that he will deal with Ernest Bai Koroma and therefore to have more confidence on a fair trial, a live media coverage on the hearing could help to demystify such thoughts already formed by the public.
“I don’t expect much from the judiciary and the government should also note that the longer the case takes the more political tension increases,” he said.
The MP said, the peace and tranquility is paramount and that if there is peace in Sierra Leone it will show on the country’s economic growth which will better attract investors and may build their confidence.
Hon Karim Kamara further states that, in 2019, there were reported cases of many threats against the ex-President, Koroma, and his recent case will only be welcomed by the general populace through a fair trial.
The Kambia MP said, President Bio and his government should also realize and understand that the opposition has divergent positive views which always helps influence development in the country.
“No government in the world succeeds without the opposition’s views taken seriously in governance. Government succeeds where there is strong opposition,” he stated.
Hon Kamara informed that, this treason case against former President is a test case to the judiciary in terms of its integrity, truthfulness and so must work in the best interests of the State when dispensing justice.
