It’s well established that the American Government has approved the McCain finance compact for Sierra Leone.
It is geared towards salvaging electricity problems in the country. Irrespective of that the U.S government set conditions ( tripartite recommendations) that needed to be implemented before the disbursement of the financial pact.
In addition, as a country that is governed by rule of law, the government inevitably summoned an emergency parliamentary sitting to rectify the acquiescence for a swift implementation of the compact.
Additionally, during the debate, the Opposition Chief Whip, Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara, robustly pointed out some of the pitfalls in the documents.
He said only focused on promoting power transmission and distribution without taking into consideration of energy generation which would address the sleek transmission.
Furthermore, Opposition Chief Whip noted that the government had failed to recognize Bubuna Phase Two to be the most reliable power generation entity.
He maintained that if Bubuna Phase Two should have been prioritized it could have been far better for the country than the Karpowership, one of the entities the government is spending huge sum of monies on without yielding the required dividends.
” Untill we build our democratic credentials, we will not attract world investments.”
He made this statement in relation to the present unfolding happenings such as human rights violations, unlawful arrests, intimidations and humiliations on civilians considered as inhibiting factors to attract serious investors to boost the economy.
Moreover, Opposition Chief Whip made it known that it was difficult for the nation to get such huge sum of money considering the thresholds of the compact but he reminded the government that it will be shameful enough if they fail to adhere to the recommendations proffered during the tripartite committee.
He maintained that as a opposition party they had done the needful as per agreement for a national unity. Yet the government is reluctant to act upon the “agreements” signed up, adding that most opposition members are still in incarceration.
He urged the government to ensure that the tripartite recommendations are implemented as that will foster peace and unity to reign in the country.
