The Parliament of Sierra Leone has said the European Union (EU) £3m fund on building certain roads in the country as being a white elephant infrastructural project done by a construction company.
The roads are danger zone as well as a death traps, making it unfit for movement.
A notice placed in Parliament stated that:
“Please be advised that the pathway located between the main Parliament Building and the Administrative Building is currently in a poor shape.”
The building is damaged. The surface is uneven and may pose a risk to pedestrians.
Parliament’s notice has further exposed the worrying situation.
“For Your Safety: Avoid using the pathway until repairs are completed; use alternative routes where possible,” the short notice reads.
Authorities have however apologize for any inconvenience the situation causing to others and members of the public .
“Be assured that we are working to address the issue as quickly as possible. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding”.
The notice was published and signed by Mr. Gilbert Bosco Nhabay Ag. Deputy Clerk of Parliament.
It could be recalled that this medium has informed visitors and MPs about the dangers of a broken pathway bridge linking the Well of Parliament and the Administrative Building within the Parliament of Sierra Leone.
MPs who spoke to this medium have also raised serious concern over the broken pathway bridge in Parliament.
One of the MPs told this medium that, they are now happy that Parliament has finally responded to the issue and has cautioned visitors all workers in Parliament to be careful about the unhealthy footpath bridge which was constructed last year by UNOPS.
“I don’t even understand why a £3m EU funded project could not even stand the test of time in a few years time after its construction, ” the MP doubted.
Osman Marah, a visitor informed this medium that the taxpayers’ monies are going down the drain due to the bad implementation of the project.
He said has affected development at parliament.
The MP has attributed the UNOPS Project as substandard and urged for their proper probing.
The former Speaker of Parliament, Dr Chernor Abass Bundu, had also raised serious safety concerns to MPs due to the substandard work.
He said the contractors should face intense questioning regarding the work.
“Leakages, cracks and many other threats are visible in Parliament,” SLPP and APC MPs had blasted.
