The information Bra Parrot has received if confirmed will be one of the disgusting news he couldn’t want to imagine not even in his wildest dreams.
That they want to demolish the Peace-market in the east end of the capital? By the way who are they contemplating this unimaginable joke?
The wisest animal is saying joke because everybody in this city knows market structures are not enough to house all numerous traders not to talk of destroying the existing ones.
But as the bird wanting to get correct and accurate information on this development, flew to the much talked about Peace-market at Ferry Junction to talk to some of the traders and stakeholders in that community.
Upon arrival at the Peace-Market, the bird met a group of people mostly traders grumbling bitterly about the information they have received that, the Mayor of Freetown Aki Sawyerr is planning to remove all the traders from the market. But where to relocate these traders remains a serious headache for the animal.
Dis nar fos life bo. Nar lek wae ose nor do for people nar ton den you wan go build for animal dem nar bush. Oooo Salone mek God hep wi.
And the bird being a peace loving and patriotic citizen, he became very concerned about the disturbing news not only now for their removal but taking into account that the raining season has already approached.
The bird in his desperation forced himself to talk to few of these disgruntled traders who told him the Peace-market was created during the days of the late President Alhaji Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, at the time when Kadie Sesay was Minister of Trade.
According to the traders, the Peace-market is one of the most peaceful markets in the western area as the name implies as one could hardly hear about problem there.
The traders further stated that, for the Mayor to remove them from place would mean to increase the number of traders on the streets of Freetown which has already become a menace.
The planned operation according to them, it is not the wish of the President, given that he already has sleepless nights to get more traders in market places to have them removed from the streets of Freetown.
The wise bird attempted to ask the traders what exactly the Mayor wants to do at the Peace-market but unfortunately they themselves cannot give an answer to the question.
The only thing they said was that a number of Councilors have been visiting the market on a daily basis to get information as to how the traders got to that place.
Some of the traders accused the City Council of not undertaking any development at the Peace-market since it was created but continues to collect market dues from them. They claimed that all the development at the market was mostly done by the traders themselves including construction of toilet and water supply.
The traders are calling on the central government to intervene so that, more traders will not flood the streets of Freetown, as the government is finding ways to reduce the number of traders on the streets.
The wise bird is following this development closely to see how it works.
The Mayor cannot stop mega-phones and loud-speakers on streets of Freetown, now she wants to remove traders that have been in a particular place for over three decades which they stressed is a mere ploy to give the sitting government what they referred to as “bad name.”
