After critical inquires by Africa24 investigative team, they have unearthed some constrains and challenges that health workers and patients are currently facing at the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital (PCMH) at Fourah bay road, Cottage hospital.
According to one of the workers, she stated that ‘’the hospital needs government and humanitarian bodies to come to their aid in the areas of instrument like, delivery medical instruments, operating instruments and the like.’’
The source added that the hospital at this current lacks basic medical equipment such as drips, gloves and others substantial medical equipment and the hospital is indeed in need of more Ambulances as it is the main referral, and teaching hospital in the country. As a result of non-availability of instruments workers will not do their work effectively, as some of the instruments are not enough as a result of that, most patients are destitute and not capable enough to take care of their medical expenses.
The source went further to say that, in the area of water supply that is another big problem as the hospital cannot go without water, as there is a growing demand for water by the inflow of patients in the hospital as that is a very serious concern. The source noted that even though there are some items in the hospital, more is needed to be done in order to meet with the demand of the inflow of patients.
On the area of electricity supply, the hospital needs urgent help, adding that the standby generator cannot serve the entire hospital except for some critical wards like labor ward, theatre and Intensive Care Unit.
The source also appeals to the authority concern for the renovation of the wards and offices to be more conducive for patients and staff. The source re-emphasized on the urgent assistance needed for the supply of materials or instruments for patients, adding that they need urgent supply to cater for the well-being of the patients.
In Conclusion, our source further stated that, health is something the government should take seriously as it is one of the fundamental goals of the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals. Health is wealth and it is something the government should at all-time prioritizes for the goodwill and safety of the health workers, patients and all Sierra Leoneans.
The working conditions for workers in the hospital are not favorable as a lot needs to be done by the government in other to motivate the workers.
It must be noted that, very senior workers in the hospitals many a time come to work very late not of their own making but because of the prevailing situation in the country, government need to make provision for senior staffs in the hospitals, not only at PCMH but in all other hospitals across the country as the profession is a lifesaving profession the source concluded.
