The Acting Speaker of Parliament; Hon. Sengehpoh Solomon Thomas, has asked for the minister of Basic and Senior Secondary School Education to appear in parliament in the next adjourned date for questioning.
He made the statement in the Chamber of Parliament. The acting speaker said the purpose of his summon in parliament is to explain the nature and status of WASSCE registration which is of public interest at the moment.
“If school authorities are responsible for such problems, we will ensure that their salaries are seized, Hon. Thomas fumed.
Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) MP and Chairman of Basic Education Committee in Parliament; Hon. Jabbie said the opposition MP’s claims against WASSCE student registration is false.
Hon. Jabbie informed that about 146,179 students have been registered for WASSCE this year.
He confirmed that many students are yet to be registered for the WASSCE examination.
Chairman, Hon. Jabbie said it is untrue to say that, the whole of Kambia (400 plus) WASSCE students won’t take examination and eighty percent of Bombali schools amounting to (65,000) student stand a risk of not taking the exams.
“There are no schools in the east and southern regions thus and so many candidates are registered in the south and eastern regions for WASSCE,” Hon. Jabbie.
The Deputy Leader of opposition in Parliament, Hon. Aaron Koroma said there are about (173,146) students to take the exam this year.
He said last academic year over 246, 000 took the WASSCE examination, adding that Parliament should take this issue seriously and summon the Minister of Education in Well of Parliament to explain why the drop of candidates this year.
The SLPP female MP Hon. Siaffa has also pleaded with the Speaker of Parliament to summon the Minister and ensure that the WASSCE portal be reopened again for schools to be registered.
“Education is the flagship project of President Julius Maada Bio and we should not punish our children because they are innocent of what is going on in schools, punish the school authorities”, Hon. Siaffa asserted.
However, the Speaker has authorized the Clerk of Parliament to summon education minister for secondary school on the next adjourned date on Tuesday 16 April, 2024 for questioning.
