The Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas and the Deputy Speaker Hon. Ibrahim Tawa Conteh had on 18 November 2024, made an inspection tour to the newly constructed NP Fuel station in Parliament. It has a capacity of 5,000 liters and it is automated one to fuel the Parliament generator.
It is done in a bid to put a permanent end to the perennial problem of power outages in the House of Parliament as well as to curtail fuel mismanagement and thievery.
Speaker Segepoh Solomon Thomas vehemently affirmed that the issue of fuel shortage for the House of Parliament has been hindering Parliament work adding that the demands for fuel on the budget of Parliament has been dwindling the budget meant to meet other parliamentary costs.
He recalled that the staff manning the generator room had been demanding for 500 liters and put to 1,000 liters.
Speaker Thomas continued that to end such problem of fuel consumption for Parliament, NP-SL areto install Fuel tank directly to connect the generator.
“So just like the NP has pumped for us 5,000 liters, we are now better placed to monitor the fuel consumption for Parliament. It has happened on two occasions when there is no EDSA light and unfortunately Parliament had no fuel in the generator even though the generator staff claimed that they had pumped fuel in the generator.”
That was the more reason we asked NP-SL to install Fuel Tank directly connected to the generator in order to avert the initial problem, said Speaker Thomas.
Speaker Thomas expressed optimism that the outcome of this new initiative would enable Parliament to quantify its fuel consumption and examine whether there would be any corrupt practices in the fuel administration.
Speaker Thomas gave assurance that the issue of fuel shortage in the generator room had been dead and would never resurrect it.
