The Consortium of Civil Society & Media Alliance on Alcohol & Tobacco (CAAT), headquartered at 48 Siaka Stevens Street in Freetown, has issued a strong condemnation of what it describes as a malicious attempt to misrepresent facts and unjustly tarnish the image of a reputable company operating within Sierra Leone’s alcohol industry.
In a press statement released by its Chairman, Mr. M.S. Biro, the Alliance reaffirmed its commitment to promoting responsible alcohol and tobacco consumption while safeguarding the public from misinformation and exploitation.
The statement follows the circulation of a viral video on social media earlier this week, which appeared to show a young woman in a helpless state, with claims that she was heavily intoxicated by alcohol. However, a fact-finding investigation launched by CAAT has revealed that the woman was reportedly under the influence of a synthetic drug, commonly known as Ecstasy, and not alcohol.
“Our investigation, supported by credible sources, confirmed that the young lady’s condition was not due to alcohol consumption, but rather the use of Ecstasy,” the CAAT statement noted. “We are deeply concerned that this incident is being exploited by certain individuals who are bent on discrediting a well-established and compliant company that is playing a key role in youth employment and national development.”
CAAT further expressed concern over what it views as a coordinated effort to extort money from employees of the company and to malign its public image for personal gain.
Key findings from the investigation include:
- The young lady’s condition was attributed to Ecstasy, not alcohol.
- The implicated company is in full compliance with national regulatory standards on alcohol production.
- Evidence points to a deliberate attempt to damage the company’s reputation for extortion purposes.
- The alcohol brand featured in the video may have been misrepresented or used in a staged manner.
- Feedback from regular customers contradicts the claims presented in the viral footage.
In response to these developments, CAAT issued several important recommendations:
- Youth are urged to consume alcohol responsibly and to remain mindful of the health risks associated with excessive drinking.
- Personal accountability and moderation are essential when making choices regarding substance use.
- The Alliance strongly condemns any form of blackmail or defamation against local investors, stressing that such acts undermine economic progress and job creation.
- Young people are advised to steer clear of harmful substances, particularly synthetic drugs like Ecstasy.
The Consortium also reminded the public that regulatory bodies closely monitor the production practices of licensed alcohol producers. It emphasized that any deviation from set guidelines is dealt with firmly. However, unfounded accusations against compliant companies, according to CAAT, are not only unjust but also indirectly target responsible regulatory institutions and government efforts to boost employment.
In keeping with its advocacy mission, CAAT members have pledged to offer psychosocial counseling support to the young woman featured in the video. The organization also plans to roll out a nationwide campaign aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of responsible alcohol use.
