There is no gainsaying that any responsible government is one that listens and act responsibly not only by providing basic necessities for its citizens but importantly to protect their lives and property at any given time.
Like in many other countries around the world, where responsible governments take proactive or preventive measures to protect the lives of their people, Sierra Leonean governments past and present on the other hand, toy with the lives of their own people. In other words, they often wait or allow the worst to happen before taking actions, in most cases, too little too late.
The unnecessary delay to take proactive actions has led to the loss of many precious lives and property. For instance, even though government is well aware of people living in disaster prone communities and the unimaginable danger they are exposed to, it has often turn blind eyes and allow them to continue to inhabit those areas.
There have been reports of frequent fire outbreaks and floodings, and its consequences have been dire or immeasurable.
The next disaster the government is waiting to strike before taking reactive measure is the Bomeh refuse dumpsite at main Bai Bureh Road, between Up Gun and Ferry Junction in the east of the capital.
Even though government has been severally informed about it and at some points advised by its international partners, including a visiting UNDP envoy to try to relocate the site outside of the city, all fell in deaf ears as it has remained recalcitrant to do so, thus exposing the lives of people to serious health risks and related dangers.
As a result of our governments’ attitude to treat very sensitive issues with cold shoulders has left many people to angrily describe them as “blind, deaf and dumb,” or I don’t care governments to say the least.
