The Minister of Sports, Madam Augusta James-Teima, has officially launched the 2024 National Boxing Championship and International Fights scheduled for April 26th and 27th.
The event took place at the Sports Zone, Lumley Beach, in Freetown earlier this week.
In her opening remarks, Madam James-Teima, commended the Boxing Association for their relentless efforts in promoting and uplifting boxing in Sierra Leone.
She highlighted the association’s successful history in organizing international competitions and expressed confidence in their ability to reach even greater heights. “This competition offers a familiar ground for you,” she said. “We aim even higher this time.”
The Sports Minister extended her gratitude to Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh for his consistent support. She also thanked President H.E Julius Maada Bio, recognizing both leaders’ unwavering commitment to advancing sports in Sierra Leone.
“I extend my thanks to Dr. Sengeh and our dynamic President for their steadfast support in advancing sports in Sierra Leone,” she remarked.
She talked of the significance of this year for sports in Sierra Leone, pointing out the numerous competitions organized by various sports associations across the country. “Today, Boxing reaffirms our commitment as a government to provide increased support to fulfill their aspirations,” she said.
She encouraged everyone to maintain this positive momentum and work towards ensuring the championship’s success.
“Let’s unite and turn this vision into reality,” she urged.
The Minister also stressed the importance of not only financial support but also the need to bring home medals and trophies. “We are set to welcome international boxers,” she said. “Promise me that we’re going for those medals. The competition is here in Sierra Leone, and the medals should remain in Sierra Leone.”
