The harrowing case of Satta Lamin, a young woman who was gang raped by more than six men in 2018 in Kailahun District, had resurfaced during the All People’s s Congress (APC) Monthly Parliamentary Press Briefing held at the party office.
Addressing the media, Hon. Lucinda Finda Kellie, Member of Parliament from Kono District, passionately spoke about the lingering trauma the incident has caused, particularly, on women across Sierra Leone.
She highlighted that Satta Lamin was targeted simply because of her political belief and allegiance to APC, calling the attack a grave violation of human rights and dignity.
“We the women of this nation will never get peace of mind if the respect and dignity of Satta Lamin continues to be ignored, “on. Lucinda Finda Kellie, said.
The MP called for renewed investigations into the case and urged all government authorities, women’s rights organizations, and the international community to stand in solidarity with victims of politically motivated gender-based violence in the country.
Satta Lamin’s case remains one of the most disturbing incidents in recent political history, symbolizing the intersection of political intolerance and gender violence in Sierra Leone, she said.
It could be recalled that the case has been channeled at the ECOWAS Court where the victim had sought redress.
Since 2018, when the incident occurred, the APC, had persistently been calling for justice regarding the gang rape matter of the deceased, which they perceived as violations of her rights.
The party is not only seeking justice for the raped victim, it has also embarked, in recent times, on calling for electoral justice.
The executive of the party have agreed for the party to move on, but many believe, the wounds of the 2023 general elections is still lingering on the minds of supporters of the APC whose members fighting this rape case.
Others say the party is working diligently to restore confidence on the supporters, giving them hope of clinching victory in the coming elections.
And so many believe justice can only be served on the rape victim case if the party wins power 2028.
