The Day for World Remembrance for Road Crash Victims (WDR) is commemorated on the third Sunday of November each year. The Sierra Leone Roads Safety Authority (SLRSA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport and Aviation is joining to observe this day.
On Tuesday 19th November, 2024 it honoured the day at Mile 36 (Waterloo-Masiaka Highway) with the theme: “That Day.”
Many states and non-state dignitaries were invited at the occasion to commemorate and yo emphasis the importance of the occasion.
Reverend Smart Senesie, Executive Director of SLRA underscored the importance of the World Day of Remembrance.
“As part of the United Nations, Sierra Leone aligns herself with this global milestone. As a government, the Big Five changes envisaged by President Julius Maada Bio by the end of his second term in office, among other things, is aimed at seeking to advance human capital development,” Senesie said.
“Safer roads, safer road users are significant to achieving that development aspirations,” Rev. Senesie added.
The Executive Director warned that the loss of lives on roads across the country would affect the human capital development of the nation, especially the educated Sierra Leoneans having diverse certificates who should be created with jobs to contribute immensely to the growth of the country’s GDP. “We remember all our compatriots killed in road accidents and those seriously or lightly injured as result of road crashes including women and children,” Executive Director reflected.
Representatives from the Military and Police present at the event made similar statements and called on all Sierra Leoneans to be conscious while driving and a warning to those crossing the streets to be very attentive.
By observing the rules of driving, that could save the lives of many drivers, passengers and pedestrians along our roads.
The Bike riders Union representatives, Ishmael Sandy and Ibrahim Sherry representative of Kekeh Riders Union and other Unions responsible for commercial transport in the country reiterated by advising their members to abstain from over speeding by admonishing the safety rules while driving and abstain from drinking alcohol prior or during driving or riding which will lead to crash or everlasting injuries to victims.
On the 26th April, 2024, SLRSA lost its Public Relations Officer, Abdul Karim Koroma had a fatal road accident within the Mile 36 community which led to his demise on that faithful day.
The authority deemed it necessary while observing the World Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims to unveil a tablet and lay a wreath ( burial flowers) at the scene of the deadly accident as a form of remembrance for the late PRO and for all road crash deceased Sierra Leoneans.
