Opposition party members of The All People’s Congress (APC)’s strange decision to boycott parliamentary sittings is one that seems not to augur well with most female elected MPs.
These Members of Parliament (MPs) were duly voted in on June 24 Sierra Leone’s Multi-Tier elections by their people from different constituencies, districts and regions.
And the MPs are expected to serve their people by being in the House of Parliament to approve development projects, to take critical decision and to make laws on behalf of the people who’ve elected them.
But since a political party is formed by a group of individuals with the ambition to gain power, APC party members had agreed including 54 winning MPs to take an aloof position on the current politics of Sierra Leone under the leadership of President Julius Maada Bio?
Does APC’s decision, however; to boycott Parliament of Sierra Leone, Municipal and Local District Councils really reflect the greater number of MPs for the greater majority of the constituents ?
Don’t female MPs bothered at all for being out of job after taking such a perilous oath to have signed a ”joint communiqué” to boycott Parliament of Sierra Leone?
These are questions which have raised critical attention by many quarters of the public.
The fact is even if APC party’s executive members keep informing Sierra Leoneans that their party’s decision is one that is ”unanimous”, it sounds like a father telling a child to go into the room and get dressed when everyone seated at home knows very well that the father is doing just a clever trick to easily escape away from the child who eagerly wants to go along with his dad on a patrol or trip ?
This scenario simply means it is obvious from the general public that such a repeated statement by APC party elders of a unanimous decision taken by the party and their MPs is clearly known to them to be untrue because no wider consultations were believed to be done among APC grassroots—supporters in communities, districts , and provinces.
And there are still understandably some deep vested interests by other members within APC.
While two male MPs have exhibited what we will describe as a ”betrayal of boldness” as they refused to bow down to the party’s boycott appeal.
A question of lack of integrity by the general public is raised as a key concern on those two ”political renegades” and future renegades from APC party.
But some heaved of praises have silently been poured onto the silent female MPs who have yet to go against the wishes of some few party members who’re holding key positions and views by the majority of supporters of APC.
Calls in support for party boycott on governance activities are believed to be inflamed just by a tiny majority of APC bigwigs and supporters at party’s headquarters in Freetown and maybe by key figures of APC at the party’s branches across the country.
The female MPs have stood their grounds not to waiver on calls by party supporters even though they might be going now through a lot under these deeply economic trying times in Sierra Leone.
But do APC’s stance favour the largest majority who voted by districts and constituencies across the country in the past elections?
That is a big big No.
We don’t believe APC executive and the entirety of the party have, in any time, conducted opinion polls, before resolving to undertake parliamentary boycott, among the many constituent voters in APC’s strongholds in the north and West of Sierra Leone and in their lesser support bases, east and south of the country.
The party had also said it would give ECSL (Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone ) a six month period to yet again conduct a fresh general elections in Sierra Leone.
Their demands hinge on allegations of vote rigging, vote tampering of ballot papers, glaring irregularities and noticeable discrepancies on voters’ ballot papers on the June 24 Sierra Leone’s 2023 Multi-Tier elections.
This decision can’t be contested by many Sierra Leoneans since questions of lack of transparency and integrity on ECSL’s official elections results are still NOT being accepted by local and international CSOs and by key donor partners UK, USA, Germany and France.
But, APC is clearly doing what we will refer to as an ‘unjustly disservice’ to female MPs and their people they’re representing from various constituencies in Sierra Leone.
A one man donation of money to a bigger party like APC is just not enough, which has been in the opposition for five years , starting a year June after the elections to run another five years as an opposition party with (SLPP)Sierra Leone People’s Party doing a second five year term as the leading government.
While these MPs are not paid monthly by the reddish party, APC, for undertaking such a painstaking sacrifice, the female MPs are watching their communities and people wallowing in hardship in this current economic turbulent times.
A rethinking is needed by the party to boosting the morale of their female MPs.
After all, we talk of women’s empowerment. And Samura Kamara, APC’s defeated presidential aspirant, believes in women’s empowerment dreams as his party’s 2023 Manifesto documented promises to deliver on this path.
Women are usually shy to say out their feelings in public.
Generally, in comparism, majority of the women in Sierra Leone have pride and integrity too in politics than men especially those two APC men fit to call boys in parliament.
