A new female organization that seeks to advocate for the betterment of women in Sella Limba Chiefdom, Karene District “Sella Icon For Women’s Empowerment and International Women For Peace and Development” has celebrated this year’s International Women’s Day.
The launching of the organization was done by the former Deputy Minister of Sports, Al-Sankoh Conteh, with the ceremony held at the Galaxy Hall in Kamakwie Town, Karene District, Northeast of Sierra Leone.
In his key address, Mr. Conteh lauded the resilience and determination of the women of Sella Limba Chiefdom and their valuable contributions towards agriculture and culture.
He hailed the effort of the former Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security Hon Marie Conteh-Jalloh for always promoting the interests of the women in Sella Limba Chiefdom.
Mr. Conteh elaborated on the significance of the International Women’s Day celebration, which he said was first proposed to be celebrated by Clara Zetkin in 1910, during the International Conference for Women in Copenhagen.
The trust of the conference was to allow women to vote and hold important positions in government.
He noted that the importance of the Day was to protect and defend the rights of women in the world.
He called on the women of Sella Limba Chiefdom to remain United and work with every women for the good of the Chiefdom.
He emphasized the importance of unity and peace and stability, noting they they could only conquer when they remain united.
In her contribution, Madam Mariama Leight called on women to stand up for their rights as the gender equality and empowerment law has espoused the empowerment and rights of women.
She said the organization would look after the welfare of women in Sella as the vulnerability among women becomes high.
The organization was formed to seek the interest of women and always advocate for their welfare in their communities.
The International Women’s Day in Kamakwie commenced with a match pass and was climaxed with the announcement of awards to personalities that had helped to promote women and youth in Sella Limba.
The live broadcast made by Hon Rev. Marie Conteh-Jalloh was explained to the audience.
She emphasized the responsibility of everyone, a quality believes to be a model for promoting the dignity of women for sustainability and resilience.
She called on women to close ranks and seek their interests for peace and stability.
