The government of India has called on Sierra Leone to join its voice in global condemnation of the recent deadly attack on Indian civilians, which took place on April 22 and claimed the lives of 26 innocent people mostly women and children. India alleges that the attack was carried out by a foreign based group believed to be supported by Pakistan and based in Palestine.
The appeal was made by an Indian delegation currently on a peace mission to Sierra Leone, aimed at spreading messages of unity, solidarity, and zero tolerance for terrorism. The delegation was led by Dr. Shrinkant Eknath Shinde, a member of India’s Royal Parliament, who addressed journalists at a brief press conference, held at the Palace Resort, Token Beach.
“Our presence in Sierra Leone is not only to spread peace but also to urge the nation to join us in denouncing this heinous act,” said Dr. Shinde.
He added that Sierra Leone is the first country to openly condemn the attack and even observed a minute of silence in honor of the victims, we are deeply grateful for that solidarity.
Dr. Shinde emphasized the strong historical and bilateral ties between the two nations, noting that India has consistently supported Sierra Leone, including during its 11 year civil war. He urged Sierra Leone to carry the message to the international stage, particularly the United Nations and the Africa Union, where he believes a united global voice could help combat the menace of terrorism.
Ms. Bansuri Swaraj, also a member of the Indian Parliament and also member of the delegation, commended Sierra Leone’s leadership for the warm welcome and moral support offered to the delegation.
Ms. Swaraj reaffirmed the delegation’s mission of spreading a message of peace and advocating for global zero tolerance against terrorism.
“Today it’s India tomorrow, it could be any other nation, this is why the global community must stand together and speak with one voice against terrorism.
“We must make it clear that such devilish acts have no place in our world,” she stated passionately.
India’s High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, Mr. Baisnab Charan Pradhan, also expressed heartfelt appreciation to Sierra Leone’s government for its timely condemnation of the attack.
“Standing with us during this painful time means a great deal to the Indian people. He added that Sierra Leone has always been a reliable partner in times of need.”
Mr. Pradhan appealed to Sierra Leone to use its diplomatic influence to raise the issue at the United Nations. “As a member of the UN, Sierra Leone’s voice carries weight. We urge you to speak out and help the world recognize the severity of this ongoing threat,” he added.
He reiterated India’s position as a peace loving nation that has, for decades, been under threat from cross border terrorism. He specifically accused Pakistan of using terrorist proxies to destabilize India, describing the continued attacks as “unjust and unacceptable.”
