Some sound political economists have spoken to the Africa24 on the recent sacking of the Bank Governor, Professor Kelfala Muana Kallon by President Julius Maada Bio.
According to these political economists the recent action of president Julius Maada Bio to send the bank governor on an indefinite leave is too little too late on the side of him. Because he should have sacked the Bank Governor long time ago for his failing fiscal and economic policies which they believed have disintegrated the country’s economy.
These economists are of the firm belief that ‘salone’ is not yet ripe for redenomination looking at the current situation of the global economy.
Currently as it stands, the country is not exporting anything to the global market like cash crops, iron ore, bauxite and other locally produced raw materials that could have helped to stabilize the country’s economy. It is believed by these economists that to redenominate a country currency that country should and must have attained certain criteria and bench marks both national and international.
The delay in sacking a veteran economist who nods during meetings has helped to pile more economic burden on vulnerable citizens who eke out for their living just to have a meal for the day.
The Sierra Leone economy needs urgent economic surgery due to huge new Leones chasing few dollars, with a runaway inflation and the new currency gradually becoming a collapsing currency.
The people have shifted the blame on president Bio for not firing the old and retarded professor till the eleventh hour when all his economic theories and policies he implemented for solid five years did not practicably actualized.
Currently as the exchange rate stands, $1 dollar is now equivalent to the price for a litre of petrol which is NLe21, 50 with price for a bag of rice almost climbing NLe1, 000.
These economists who spoke to this medium stated that president Bio in pleasing his political cronies by entrusting them with positions of trust have wrecked the economy because the president has been forcing square pegs in round holes.
