The long awaited Quinquennial Delegate Conference election for Motor Drivers And General Transport Worker’s Union held on Monday June 23rd 2025 ended in deadlock at the Saint Anthony’s Parish Hall, Syke Street, Freetown with no outright winner for the presidential position. The two leading candidates got 68 votes each, while the third got only 20 votes.
One hundred and fifty nine delegates voted for 25 positions. The three presidential aspirants were Mr Abdulai Bah, Ibrahim Sam and Abu Saudi aka Abu White, Mr Abdulai Bah and and closest challenger Ibrahim Sam were tied to sixty eight votes each while Mr Abu Saidu got twenty votes which eventually allowed for a rerun or run off between the two leading candidates.
In his speech, the outgoing President Alpha Amadu Bah told the delegates that the election was different from all previous Driver’s Union election because the Supreme Court had orderd that the election must be held not later than 30th June, 2025.

He therefore called on all the delegates to think and vote wisely for a candidate that will take the Union from where he stopped. “This Union needs peace beacsue without peace, there will be no development. Let us not continue to go to court after this particular election, which is why we have people from Sierra Leone Electoral Commission ( ECSL) who are trained to conduct our election on a clean slate,” the former president warned. In order to have an orderly and transparent election, Mr. Bah said that’s is why he said they invited the presence of the police, media and observers, Office of National Security, Lawyers and representatives from the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Labour Congress among other relevant stakeholders.
Meanwhile, Mr Bah outlined some of the achievements he made during his tenure including but not limited to erection of Union administrative building at the Clay Factory, Freetown Lorry Park and the release of forty nine drivers from the Correction center at Pademba Road.
“Vote for a president who will continue with the good work and not someone who will be trigger happy to take the Union to court for obvious reasons,” he warned, and called on members to remember that promotions come from God only and called on them to avoid anything that will plunge the Union into dispute.
Other representatives including Hon. PC MP, Ali Musa III from Mofindor in Kono, Mr. Aruna Sesay from ONS, Mr Abu Bakarr Sillah head of Policy and Research, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Commissioner Esther, Lawyer Reffery representing Mr. Sorie Tengbeh Marrah –Esq., all made meaningful contributions.
The re-run presidential election will take place on Saturday 28th June 2025 between Mr. Abdulai Bah and Mr Ibrahim Sam.
