The wise bird could vividly remember in 2023 when the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) introduced the Proportional Representation (PR) system of government to their own advantage as claimed by their opponents.
At that time, the main opposition APC party and other political parties fought against the idea of the PR system but the opposition did not see the light at the end of the day as the ruling party won and formed majority in Parliament.
Of late, the Parrot has been receiving calls from so many quarters to enquire whether the Proportional Representation system of government will continue to be in force come 2028.
The latest information reaching the bird is that, the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) party has renewed its call for the government to abolish the Proportional Representation (PR) system and return to constituency elections.
According to the report, Constituency elections will reflect the will of the people by way of enabling the voters to make their right choice.
The report further states that, the PR system always weakens accountability between the electorates and their representatives.
The report further cited the 1991 Constitution which stipulates a Constituency based election as the standard electoral module.
The report further established that the PR system was introduced during the exceptional circumstances i.e. the eleven year senseless civil war in the country.
From what Bra Parrot has gathered, the APC has viewed the PR system as a temporal solution to give way to an accountable constituency based election.
The bird as usual went out to get the views of the general public especially on sensitive issues and all those he contacted are in full support to abolish the PR system of government.
The people further stated that the system will make them not to know their representatives in Parliament.
According to them, the SLPP knows it is only when the PR system is in place they will have majority in Parliament, and it must not be used as a political weapon against other political parties, they concluded.
They also asked in anticipation whether the PR system of government will continue come 2028.
The bird is watching to see whether the request made by the opposition will not fall in deaf ears.
